Canelo Alvarez, Gennady Golovkin reportedly agree to third fight

Pound-for-pound fighters Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin have finally come to terms with a third fight.
According to reports, Alvarez and Golovkin are tentatively set for a showdown on September 12, provided the two take care of business first.
Alvarez (53-1-2, 36 KOs) was originally scheduled to challenge England’s Billy Joe Saunders for the WBO super middleweight on May 2 in Las Vegas but the fight was moved around June due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Golovkin (40-1-1, 35 KOs), meanwhile, is set for a mandatory defense of his IBF middleweight belt against Kamil Szeremeta on June 6 at The Forum in Inglewood, California.
Alvarez and Golovkin battled to a draw in their first fight in September 2017 before the Mexican counterpuncher won the rematch by majority decision a year later.
The two middleweights were rumored for a third fight in 2019 but Alvarez instead chose to fight Daniel Jacobs, whom he beat by unanimous decision to retain the WBA and WBC middleweight belts and win the IBF strap, before going up two weight classes to knock out Sergey Kovalev for the WBO light heavyweight crown last November.
The 37-year-old Golovkin beat Ukraine’s Sergiy Derevyanchenko in his last fight in October 2019 at Madison Square Garden in New York where he claimed the vacant IBF and IBO middleweight titles.
Despite the development, nothing is set in stone as things would still depend on how the situation regarding the new coronavirus goes.
Major sporting events like the NBA, NHL and the UFC, as well as football seasons in Europe among others, have been shut down due to the pandemic.
