Jerwin Ancajas excited to face another Olympian in 10th title defense

MANILA, Philippines—Jerwin Ancajas’ 10th title defense brought back some nostalgia as he faces another former Olympian in Fernando Martinez on Saturday (Sunday Manila time) in Las Vegas.
The IBF super flyweight champion will make the landmark defense of the title that he won in 2016 from McJoe Arroyo, who was also an Olympian.
Article continues after this advertisement“He motivates me to fight because he is an Olympic boxer. I am so excited and feeling energetic for this fight because I got this belt from McJoe Arroyo, who was also an Olympian,” said Ancajas in the pre-fight press conference.
Ancajas (33-1-2) doesn’t have a distinguished amateur career as Martinez and Arroyo as he never got to the the Summer Games.
Martinez, meanwhile, represented Argentina in the 2016 Rio Olympics while Arroyo fought for Puerto Rico in the 2008 Beijing Games.
Article continues after this advertisementAncajas said that fighting Martinez (13-0) is akin to fighting in the Summer Games and he’d gladly look for a knockout the moment it presents itself.
“When I was an amateur I dreamed of fighting in the Olympics, but I turned pro early. If I beat my challenger it is also like fighting in the Olympics. If I have the opportunity or an opening, I will do [go for a knockout],” said Ancajas.
The 30-year-old is also making his Las Vegas debut after a professional career that started way back in 2009.
“This is my dream, to fight here in Las Vegas. I am so happy that Martinez worked hard for this fight. As the champion I hope I can put on a good fight,” said Ancajas.
