Filoil Preseason Cup: FEU blasts returning JRU for fourth win

MANILA, Philippines—Far Eastern University took advantage of a rusty Jose Rizal University en route to a 76-42 romp, in Group B of the Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup at San Juan Arena on Monday.

The Tamaraws held the Heavy Bombers to 42 points, the lowest output in the preseason tournament. San Sebastian’s 47-point total in a loss to La Salle on Sunday was previously the lowest.

“We just caught them on an off day. From what I know, it took them a while to isolate. They were isolated for a while and this is their first game after so many days. I’m sure they weren’t able to practice as well,” said FEU head coach Olsen Racela, referring to JRU, which played its first game since July 31.

JRU’s rust showed early on in the first half. After being down, 10-19, in the first quarter, While the Bombers groped for form, the Tamaraws played like a well-oiled machine from the get-go. They put the game away in the third quarter after stretching their lead to 33, 63-30.

FEU netted 24 points off JRU’s 20 turnovers and shut down the Bombers to just 19.7 percent from the field.

Xyrus Torres scored 11 points on three triples to lead a balanced effort by the Tamaraws (4-3).

No JRU player hit double digits with Jonathan Medina’s measly eight points pacing the Bombers, who stumbled to their fourth loss in as many outings.
