In the early part of the first quarter, Williams went up for the layup but landed awkwardly. He was subbed out for Poy Erram and wouldn’t return.

“Unfortunately, when he missed the wide open layup, he tweaked something on his left calf muscle,” said coach Chot Reyes after their 90-81 win over the Elasto Painters at Philsports Arena on Wednesday.

TNT banked on a near triple-double from Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, a third quarter eruption from Rey Nambatac and its collective effort on the defensive end to defeat Rain or Shine, 90-81, Wednesday in the opener of their PBA Governors’ Cup semifinal series at Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

Hollis-Jefferson had 26 points capped off with a four-point shot in the waning moments on top of 13 rebounds, nine assists, five steals and four blocks as the Tropang Giga gained a headstart in the best-of-seven affair pitting the teams that won their respective groups in the initial phase of the tournament.

Nambatac dropped 11 of his 14 points in the third that also helped TNT pull away after trailing 53-49 at the half to help beat the former team he faced in a playoff series for the first time.

MANILA, Philippines—Ginebra guard Stephen Holt was nothing but ecstatic after having played his first game in a PBA semifinals series.

It certainly helped his mood that his Gin Kings won over San Miguel Beer, 122-105, to get a headstart  in their best-of-seven Governors’ Cup series.

“It’s big time,” said Holt at Philsports Arena on Wednesday.

MANILA, Philippines—Justin Brownlee is not one to forget the huge beatdown that Ginebra absorbed at the hands of San Miguel Beer in the second round of the PBA Governors’ Cup elimination phase.

Instead of frowning upon it, Brownlee used it as a motivation to power through in Game 1 of the semifinals against the Beermen, 122-105, at Philsports Arena on Wednesday.

“Whenever somebody beats you the way we got beat, it’s definitely motivation. We understand that San Miguel’s a very tough team. They’ve been winning championships for years and we understand that,” said Brownlee.

MANILA, Philippines–Justin Brownlee went on a tear from the four-point line as Barangay Ginebra rolled to a 122-105 win over San Miguel Beer to open the PBA Governors’ Cup semifinals on a bright note Wednesday at Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

Brownlee finished with 33 points after knocking down five four-pointers on top of eight rebounds and five assists which helped the Gin Kings break loose and draw first blood in their best-of-seven series with the sister team Beermen.

He also drained three of Ginebra’s 12 triples to also highlight why the crowd favorites were able to maximize a nine-day rest after making short work of old rival Meralco with a three-game sweep of the quarterfinals.

The teams left jockeying for the PBA Governors’ Cup title have been trimmed down to the final four, and no one seems to have an advantage over anybody, which makes these two best-of-seven semifinal derbies the most interesting in a long while.

San Miguel and Barangay Ginebra tangle in the curtain raiser, while Rain or Shine takes on defending champion TNT in the nightcap of a doubleheader set on Wednesday at PhilSports Arena in Pasig City, and though no one ever said that a series can be won in the first game, dictating the pace carries a lot of importance.

After being put through the gauntlet by Converge, the Beermen are hoping to be an entirely different squad when they battle the in-form Gin Kings in the 5 p.m. contest that marks the start of yet another sister act that, in the past, more often than not go down the proverbial wire.
