Filoil: Hot-shooting JRU torches USC
MANILA, Philippines — Jose Rizal University turned to its outside shooting to beat University of San Carlos, 78-61, in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup Wednesday at the Arena in San Juan.
Jaycee Ascuncion and Philip Paniamogan made four triples each for the Heavy Bombers, who launched 11 3-pointers throughout the game.
Ascuncion scored 18 points while Paniamogan finished with 14 as both snipers went four-of-eight from downtown.
“We have no idea on how they play. We just anticipated the plays that they would possibly do,” said JRU head coach Vergel Meneses.
“We just heard that they have a big man so I told the boys that we have to be ready, and they have to play defense on their own.
Congolese Espoir Toyambi carried the Warriors with a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds.
Miguel Plata tried to will USC back in the third quarter behind his blistering four-of-seven shooting from long range with Paniamogan and Ascuncion clicking at the offensive end, JRU managed to keep USC at bay.
