Arellano nets first NCAA volleyball crown

MANILA, Philippines—And Cinderella finally has a tiara.

Going up against perennial power San Sebastian College Lady Stags, the Arellano University Chiefs rose out of nothing to claim their first ever NCAA Women’s Volleyball crown in the second game of the best-of-three series 3-0, 25-23, 25-19, 26-24, Friday afternoon at the Arena in San Juan.

Arellano followed up their 3-1 victory in Game 1 and pounced on the Lady Stags–winner of 23 titles including an unprecedented 10 straight–for the title sweep.

Down 17-19, the Lady Chiefs regrouped for the victory to claim the third set in extra points to the jubilation of the girls in blue.

Menchie Tubiera was in hunting mode preying on the Lady Stags for 18 points while Christine Joy Rosario, Shirley Salamagos and Danna Henson each had seven points.

Gretchel Soltones’ 24 points could not save the Lady Stags who got little contribution from other players.
