Host University of the Philippines (UP) kicked off the 78th season of the UAAP in style, putting on an impressive show at Smart Araneta Coliseum on Saturday before the collegiate wars start anew.
With this season’s theme “Tumitindig, Sumusulong,” the Iskos (UP students’ nickname as “Iskolar ng Bayan” or scholars) showcased diversity in their performance with five UP colleges participating in the routine.
Highlighting Filipino cultures and traditions in the performance, UP trotted out all eight schools to the “archipelago,” ushering them to the stage through “balangays (plank boat).”
Fittingly, the UP Pep Squad served as the exclamation point of the routine, as the multi-time cheerdance champs entered the stage in a walking pyramid before going through all eight schools’ chants.
UAAP President Michael Tan declared the games open after the customary parade of athletes.
Earlier, the University of Santo Tomas received the Season 77 general championship trophies for both the seniors and juniors division. RAM
