ONE lightweight world Champion Eduard Folayang has been representing the Philippines in any way that he can.

Aside from his exploits in mixed martial arts that have brought pride to the country, Folayang has also showcased Filipino culture by wearing a traditional Barong Tagalog with  Igorot weaving patterns for festivities outside the cage.

“I represent the Philippines and my ethnicity by wearing a Barong. I am proud to wear it each and every time. I also use a Barong for awardings and speaking engagements,” said the Team Lakay bet.

“I think it sends a message that you do not have to imitate other nation’s style to look good. We have to be proud of your own identity.”

Folayang, who ended his year in a bang by recapturing the lightweight crown with a unanimous decision over Amir Khan last November, gets his Barong Tagalog from Easter Weaving, a store in Baguio City which sells products that highlight Philippine heritage and contemporary culture.

“Our Barong is unique, which is why I like wearing it so much. I want to show how unique Filipinos are. I am very proud of where I came from,” he said.

Folayang’s proud representation of his heritage has managed to catch the attention of spectators, including ONE CEO International Victor Cui, who also has Filipino roots.

“Victor Cui likes my formal attire so much,” Folayang recalled with a smile. “In fact he likes it so much, I had to buy one for him. He was very happy when he got it.”
