Josie Gabuco settles for bronze in Asian Elite boxing

MANILA, Philippines—Josie Gabuco settled for the bronze medal in the light flyweight division, losing to Uzbekistan’s Gulasal Sultonalieva, 4-1, in the semifinals of the ASBC Asian Elite Men and Women’s Boxing Championships Thursday in Dubai.

The Philippines’ medal hopes now pin on Olympics-bound Eumir Marcial for middleweight, Junmilardo Ogayre in bantamweight, and Mark Lester Durens in light flyweight.

Marcial, who’s already 1-0 in his professional career, will face Jafarov Saidjamshid of Uzbekistan in the semifinals.

Durens will take on Daniyal Sabit of Kazakhstan while Ogayre will square off against Mirazizbek Mirzahalilov of Uzbekistan.

Marcial is one of four Filipinos qualified for the Olympics together with Nesthy Petecio, Irish Magno, and Carlo Paalam.
