MANILA, Philippines — Tab Baldwin may be a no-nonsense type of head coach, but he has a bit of fun too every once in a while.
During Gilas Pilipinas’ training on Tuesday, Baldwin, who also serves as Gilas Pilipinas’ program director, recreated SJ Belangel’s buzzer-beating triple against South Korea in the Fiba Asia Cup qualifiers in Clark.
Belangel’s off balance 3-pointer won it for the Philippines in its first meeting with Korea. The dramatic victory marked the first time the Philippines beat its longtime rival since the 2013 Fiba Asia Championship.
Gilas went on to sweep the qualifiers after capping off its campaign with another stunner over Korea, 82-77, on Sunday.
The Philippines, which plays China in a tune-up game on Wednesday in Clark, will leave for Serbia on Thursday for the Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
