MANILA, Philippines—Fiba has rescheduled its 2021 Asia Cup, originally set for next month, to July 2022 due to travel and movement restrictions brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Jakarta, Indonesia will still serve as the host city for the rebooked tournament.
“Fiba Asia has carefully assessed the planning and organization of its upcoming Asia events in consultation with the Fiba Asia Board as well as key stakeholders and partners,” wrote Fiba Executive Director-Asia Hagop Khaijiran.
“This evaluation has taken into consideration multiple aspects such as current travel restrictions, the well-being of the participants, fan access, and the objective of ensuring the highest quality of events.”
The new 2021 Asia Cup dates, which have yet to be announced, will take place after the Fiba Basketball World Cup Asia Qualifiers window.
A total of 13 teams, including the Philippines, have already qualified for the Asia Cup. The last three will be determined after two qualifying tournaments featuring the third-ranked teams in August 2021.
“We look forward to successful Fiba Asia Cup events without facing any obstacles, until then stay safe,” wrote Khaijiran.
