MANILA, Philippines—Errol Spence Jr. left the hospital in good spirits and vowed to return “in no time” following a successful surgery in his left eye to fix a torn retina.
Spence, who pulled out of his fight against Manny Pacquiao originally scheduled August 21, said that he initially wanted to go through with the Pacquiao fight and have surgery afterward but his doctor advised against his wishes.
“Emergency surgery went great thanks,” posted Spence, who had surgery at Eye Institute of Texas, on Instagram. “Thanks to everyone for their well wishes and prayers. I’ll be back in no time. I look as it is, it could always be worse and being able to see my kids grow is the most important thing to me.”
“I was telling the doctor let me fight this fight and I’ll get surgery right after but doc wasn’t having it,” wrote Spence, whose eye injury was detected in a medical examination. “Still rocking the same colors for my next fight so the merch [merchandise] will remain the same because my fit was fire.”
As the WBC and IBF welterweight champion recovers, he will just have to watch Cuban Yordenis Ugas defend the WBA Super title against the Filipino icon.
Spence shared he also got some advances from former UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping, who suffers from strabismus caused by a detached retina after his fight against Vitor Belfort in 2013.
“He has to listen to the doctors 100 percent for a full recovery. I pushed too hard too soon and lost the vision completely,” posted Bisping.
