Choco Mucho still winless, bows to Kazakhtan’s Zhetysu

MANILA, Philippines—Choco Mucho went winless in Group A after losing to Kazakh powerhouse Zhetysu, 25-22, 25-19, 25-15, in the 2021 AVC Asian Women’s Club Volleyball Championship Saturday at Terminal 21 in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.

The Filipino representative logged a 0-2 record in the group stage but the team will still play in the quarterfinals where it will face the No.2 team from Group B.

Zhetysu, the winner of nine Kazakhstani women’s volleyball league titles, dominated the third set and never allowed Choco Mucho to get in any sort of rhythm in the final period.

Anastasiya Gurbanova gave Zhetysu a 22-13 lead forcing the ball through Kalei Mau’s block for pushing the Kazakhs to a nine-point lead late in the match.

Mau managed to salvage one last point for the Filipinos with a back row attack but it was mere formality as Zhetysu cruised to the win.

Zhetysu will play its next game of the tournament on Sunday against hometown team Nakhon Ratchasima Qmin VC.
