MANILA, Philippines—From one great Filipino athlete to another, Hidilyn Diaz hailed the Philippine women’s football team for its feat in the 2022 AFC Asian Cup on Monday.

The Filipino female booters made history by clinching the country’s first ever trip to the World Cup after beating Taiwan in a thrilling Asian Cup quarterfinal via penalty shootout.

“[They did] great. It brings so much pride and inspiration to witness it because I saw the joy in the athletes when the goal was scored,” Diaz wrote in Filipino on her Instagram.
