MANILA, Philippines–At the cusp of individual glory, Scottie Thompson—one of the top candidates for the PBA Most Valuable Player award—is making sure he doesn’t lose sight of what is important.

“Of course I’m happy to be one of the candidates,” Thompson, the do-it-all Barangay Ginebra guard, said on Thursday during the PBA media day.

“But the main goal is always the team and winning the all-Filipino [trophy],” said Thompson, who averaged 12.2 points, 8.7 rebounds and 4.2 assists in 10 games in the last Philippine Cup.

Barangay Ginebra coach Tim Cone is excited about Thompson’s shot at the league’s highest individual award.

“I think it will help his confidence,” said Cone. “So I hope he gets it.”

“At this point of his development, I still feel he has a lot more he can do and he’s still gonna grow,” Cone added.

Thompson is facing stiff opposition from TNT star Mikey Williams, who spearheaded the Tropang Giga’s championship run in last season’s Philippine Cup.
