MANILA, Philippines—Filipino champion Mark Magsayo pounded his chest as he went face-to-face with Mexican challenger Rey Vargas during the official weigh-in at Thompson San Antonio-Riverwalk hotel on Saturday morning (Manila time).

A fired up Magsayo will defend his WBC featherweight title for the first time against Vargas on Sunday at Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Both fighters tipped the scales at 125.5 pounds.

Magsayo (24-0, 16KOs) and Vargas (35-0, 22KOs) headline a Showtime event that also features Brandon Figueroa and Carlos Castro in a WBC featherweight eliminator.

The 27-year-old Tagbilaran City native is coming off an upset win over longtime champion Gary Russell Jr. six months ago.

Vargas, 31, meanwhile, is a former champion at super bantamweight.

Vargas made his debut at featherweight by beating Leonardo Baez back in November 2021 and hasn’t fought since.
