MANILA, Philippine–Carl  Tamayo led University of the Philippines to an 83-59 blowout of Mapua to kick off the Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup Saturday at Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.

The Gilas Pilipinas forward scored an impressive 16-point and 16-rebound double-double to anchor Fighting Maroons to their first win in Group A.

Tamayo, the UAAP Season 84 Rookie of the Year, ignited UP’s 26-point third quarter pullaway scoring eight in that stretch to give his side the 57-46 lead entering the payoff period.

UP’s lead ballooned to as big 26 points, 79-53, with 2:24 to play.

“Our focus right now is how can improve as a team,” said Fighting Maroons coach Goldwin Monteverde. “Whatever lapses we had in the first time, we just talked it out and they made the adjustments. That’s our goal everytime, on learning how we can adjust during games.”

Gerry Abadiano chipped in 13 points, seven boards, and three assists, while CJ Catapusan had nine points and four rebounds in the opening day win.

Warren Bonifacio led Mapua with 11 points and nine rebounds while Brian Lacap scored 11 in the loss.
