Sports great Lydia de Vega passes away aged 57. –STEPHANIE MERCARDO
MANILA, Philippines — Two resolutions expressing condolences on the passing of sprint legend Lydia de Vega were filed at the Senate on Thursday.
Senators Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. and Manuel “Lito” Lapid filed the separate resolutions that extended condolences on the death of Asia’s fastest woman.
In their resolutions, Revilla and Lapid noted the contributions of De Vega, especially in the country’s sports history.
“Lydia is truly a true Asian track and field legend — who has excellently personified the admirable traits of a Filipina — passionate, determined, disciplined, and stunningly graceful in all her endeavors,” said Revilla.
“[T]he untimely death of one of the most decorated athletes in the country and a legend of track and field, who offered significant and invaluable contributions to the Philippines, is a loss not only to the Filipino nation but for the whole international sporting community,” Lapid stated.
Several senators also mourned the death of the athlete.
De Vega, 57, lost her battle against breast cancer on Wednesday, August 10.
