The United States may have secured its spot in next year’s Olympics, but coach Steve Kerr is not thinking about that just yet.

While the Americans made sure they will be playing on another grand basketball stage next year, Kerr would like to focus on the current challenge of leading his team to the Fiba World Cup championship despite a less star-studded, NBA-filled roster.

Bogdan Bogdanovic rediscovered his shooting touch when it mattered most on Sunday.

After shooting 1-of-13 from the three-point line in their tough 78-76 loss to Italy on Friday, Bogdanovic made all of his seven shots en route to a 20-point effort in just three quarters to propel Serbia past the Dominican Republic, 112-79, and into the Fiba World Cup quarterfinals.

“I said after that night against Italy, that it is not possible [for me] to shoot 1-of-13 again from three,” the Atlanta Hawks told reporters.

Austin Reaves played his worst game so far in Manila for the Fiba World Cup on Sunday night as Team USA fell to Lithuania to wrap up its group phase campaign.

Reaves couldn’t get anything going all game on both ends, with hot-shooting Lithuania drawing him into the post and punishing the Americans with the mismatches that led to him fouling out with over two minutes left.

The Manila crowd-favorite guard took on guys almost twice his size in the paint and gave Lithuania another layer to its thriving offense aside from its exceptional shooting that buried Team USA early with a 21-point deficit.

“I like the game. I like what happened tonight,” Kerr said in the postgame press conference to digest what went wrong for the Americans in a matchup between teams already assured of quarterfinal berths.

Team USA fell behind early behind Lithuania’s efficient three-point shooting and its size advantage, and was forced to play catch up the rest of the way, leaving a dent in its hopes of winning back the World Cup.

Gilas Pilipinas’ window to make the Paris Olympic Games is shrinking, its chances significantly dented by Japan’s comeback win over higher-ranked Finland in the 2023 Fiba World Cup last Sunday.

Things look even tougher when it comes to surviving Group A after back-to-back losses. Erik Spoelstra had a plan. He was going to finish college and head to the Philippines to play professional basketball in his mother’s homeland. He’d been watching games from that part of the world on VHS tapes for years and wanted to experience those atmospheres for himself.

The plan changed. The paperwork he needed to play in the Philippines got delayed, so he played in Germany instead. And after a little time there, he got a chance to interview for a video-room job with the Miami Heat. The rest is history. He never got to Manila as a player.

Gilas battles Dominican Republic as Fiba World Cup begins

August 25, 2023 – 5:35AM

Gilas Pilipinas' Final 12 for the Fiba World Cup.

Gilas Pilipinas’ Final 12 for the Fiba World Cup.

There will be chaos.

It won’t be just the traffic snarl or the frantic search for tickets, parking spaces and the right entryways inside the cavernous Philippine Arena. There will be that huge ball of emotions exploding into a mess of postgame analyses across every platform known to basketball fans by the time the final buzzer ends the game between the Philippines and the Dominican Republic late Friday night, when the Fiba World Cup finally tips off.

Whether it will be a beautiful chaos or a cacophony will depend on whether or not Gilas Pilipinas can deliver one thing: A perfect game.

That’s what Gilas Pilipinas needs to turn in against a powerful foe.

And that, according to national coach Chot Reyes, is just the minimum requirement.

Serbian coach who belittled Gilas Pilipinas no longer thinks squad lacks quality

Aleksandar Djrodjevic, the Serbian national coach who said Gilas Pilipinas was “missing quality” during the 2019 Fiba World Cup, now has nothing but admiration for the latest edition of the National Five.

“It’s a long time ago,” he said of his comments about the Yeng Guiao-coached squad that went home empty-handed and finished 32nd—dead-last—in the showcase held in Foshan, China.

Chot Reyes talks about Gilas Pilipinas size—and heart

It may seem ironic that Gilas Pilipinas can finally field a tall team in its historic hosting of the Fiba World Cup 2023, at a time when the game has already shifted to small ball—utilizing smaller, agile, and outside scorers.

Ten years ago, Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes relied on agility and outside shooting anchored on his guards Jimmy Alapag, Jayson Castro, and LA Tenorio to end the country’s 36-year absence in the world stage in the Fiba Asia Championship at Mall of Asia Arena.

He added Paul Lee and tapped versatile center Andray Blatche in their 2014 World Cup debut in Seville, Spain, where they won a game over Senegal.

Back then, the Philippines was forced to go small to make up for its lack of size.

Gilas Pilipinas will be flaunting a ferocious frontline in the Fiba World Cup this Friday—arguably the tallest ever in the nation’s basketball history.

But national coach Chot Reyes isn’t too fond of anchoring the team’s chances on the towering frontcourt that will feature Kai Sotto, AJ Edu, and two-time World Cup veterans June Mar Fajardo and Japeth Aguilar.

Colon shared that he heard a lot about the Philippines from former Puerto Rican national player Balkman, who also played as the import of Alab Pilipinas in the Asean Basketball League from 2018 to 2019 and recently saw action as reinforcement for Strong Group and Zamboanga Valientes this year.

With reporters awaiting the arrival of Chot Reyes in the last press briefer before the start of the global competition at Araneta Coliseum on a fair-weathered Thursday afternoon, what greeted them was a carefree coach wearing a genuine smile.

Plans for the start of the Fiba World Cup in Okinawa, Japan, were unaffected Thursday after a North Korean rocket launch prompted an alert ordering some residents to evacuate.

Press conferences and practices for the eight teams that are beginning World Cup play in Okinawa went on as scheduled Thursday. The tournament begins Friday, also in the Philippines and Indonesia. There were no reports of damage.

Gilas Pilipinas knows stopping Karl-Anthony Towns will ‘take a village’

As obvious as it gets, NBA star Karl-Anthony Towns will have Gilas Pilipinas’ full attention come the opener of the 2023 Fiba World Cup.

As coach Chot Reyes would put it, it would “take a village” for the Philippines to stop one of the best centers in the NBA from the Dominican Republic.

“I don’t think it’s physically possible for any single person on our team or perhaps in the entire World Cup to stop Karl Anthony Towns 1-on-1 so it’s going to take a village to beat them,” said Reyes in a press conference at Araneta Coliseum on Thursday.

Dominican Republic doesn’t have the complete blueprint yet on how to defeat Gilas Pilipinas but one thing’s for sure, Jordan Clarkson will be of significant focus.

During a press conference at Araneta Coliseum on Thursday, coach Nèstor Garcia said that Clarkson is a problem for the Dominicans in their Fiba World Cup opener match-up, especially with his NBA-caliber skills.

Tough as Group A may be, the Dominican Republic is adamant in focusing on one task at a time.

The Dominicans are purely thinking of Gilas Pilipinas at the moment as they square off on the first day of the 2023 Fiba World Cup at Philippine Arena.

“Well, we go at it step by step. Even in our exhibition games, we play thinking that our first important game is against the Philippines,” coach Nèstor Garcia said in a team introductory press conference at Araneta Coliseum on Thursday.

Although the Black Antelopes are facing the Philippines in their second game of the group stage on Sunday, Clarós is already bracing for the host, composed of NBA star Clarkson and “athletic and excellent shooters.”

Fit-again Scottie Thompson is determined to make his fellow countrymen proud as Gilas Pilipinas defends its home court in the Fiba World Cup 2023 starting on Friday at Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan.

After rejoining Gilas without restrictions last week following his recovery from a metacarpal fracture on his right hand, the reigning PBA Most Valuable Player is no longer thinking about his recent injury as he remained focused on his goal to contribute to the squad if he makes the final cut.

“Everything is good. [I’m] slowly getting back and of course, my hand is slowly getting better. It heals every day. And that’s a good thing and good news for me,” Thompson told Inquirer Sports in Filipino.

World No. 10 Italy arrived in Manila on Tuesday afternoon in high spirits, thanks largely to a perfect run in its preparatory games geared toward the Fiba World Cup.

“We’re so happy to be here and you are all lovely in person,” coach Gianmarco Pozzecco told reporters at Naia Terminal 3 after a connecting flight from Hong Kong aboard Cathay Pacific CX 919.

The Azzurri are coming off a seven-game winning streak over teams like Greece, Serbia, China. Their latest was against New Zealand, 88-81, in the Fiba Solidarity Cup in Shenzhen, China on Monday.

Considering that about 110 million people live in the Philippines, it’s not feasible to expect that they all would be basketball fans.

“But it’s close,” said Tim Cone, the country’s top professional coach.

And that might not be an understatement, either.

Fiba World Cup starts on Friday, spread out over three nations — the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia. It’ll be centered in Manila, where the medal rounds will be held in early September, where the favored U.S. team will play all its games in the event and where fans have been waiting for years for this chance at seeing some of the game’s biggest names competing in their city.

Nothing personifies the word “colossal” much like Group D in the 2023 Fiba World Cup in Manila.

The Mall of Asia Arena will be home to several showdowns of tough centers with Lithuania, Montenegro, Egypt and Mexico.

With only two teams able to qualify for the next round of the much-anticipated tourney, it’s time to see who will star for the four teams competing in a physical pool.

All eyes will be on Team USA and its collection of NBA talents when they make their 2023 Fiba World Cup debut on Saturday at Mall of Asia Arena.

The United States, bannered by All-Star guard Anthony Edwards, finds itself slotted in a relatively light Group C with an ailing Greece side, New Zealand and Jordan.

Greece and Jordan open Group C play at 4 p.m. while the US battles New Zealand at 8:40 p.m.

A perennial contender on the world stage, Serbia finds itself the favorite in Group B.

Joining Serbia, which made the finals in 2014, at Araneta Coliseum are China, Puerto Rico and South Sudan.

Gilas Pilipinas faces a tall order as it tries to qualify for the next round and chase an Olympic dream when it hosts Group A in the Fiba World Cup 2023 starting August 25.

Sixteen of the top 32 basketball teams are coming to Manila including the powerhouse team and favorite United States as the country hosts the World Cup for the first time since 1978. But Group A will be the most important pool for the Filipinos as they rally behind the national team, which is raring to advance to the next round.

Group A will kick off the global basketball spectacle at Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan, where the host country tries to break the highest attendance record in a Fiba World Cup game.

Inquirer Sports took a deeper look at Group A in a series of previews for the first round of the group stage held in Manila.
