MANILA, Philippines–To start or to come off the bench for San Miguel Beer is a question farthest from the mind of newcomer Jeron Teng.

“For me, I just fill the roles that my coaches are going to give me,” the second-generation PBA talent told reporters on Tuesday, donning a jersey that bore the same crest in his father’s uniform back in the ’90s.

“I’m a team player, so what’s important is really the goal—and that is to win a championship,” he went on.

The younger Teng entered free agency a few weeks ago after being released by Converge. He was later picked up by the Beermen and signed to a two-year deal.

Teng comes in at a time when San Miguel is in a surplus of guards, which should typically worry a player as this means shorter playing minutes.

But for a talent used to winning at the amateur level but has yet to snare a championship in the pros, Teng doesn’t really mind how he is utilized.

“Whatever (the coaching staff) ask of me or need me to do, I’ll do it,” he said. “Whether it’s doing the not-so-glamorous tasks. Whatever it takes for us to win a championship. We all have a similar goal.”

Teng has only practiced thrice with the stacked Beermen, but he is confident that the three weeks left will be enough for him to integrate into Jorge Gallent’s system.

“We’re all very eager to win more,” he said. “We’re fortunate that our first game is on Nov. 15. We’ll have three weeks of preparations.”
