Barangay Ginebra seemed like the fresher team and put on a masterful beating of NorthPort, 115-93, Wednesday to gain a headstart in their best-of-seven PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinal series at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Troy Rosario and RJ Abarrientos led a third quarter pullaway that enabled the Gin Kings to shellshock a Batang Pier side that came into the Final Four riding on their incredible run to the top seed and eliminating the Magnolia Hotshots in the quarters.
This despite Ginebra dealing with the challenges of preparing the semis without coach Tim Cone, Justin Brownlee, Scottie Thompson, Rosario, Jamie Malonzo and Japeth Aguilar and LA Tenorio due to Gilas Pilipinas’ campaign in the final window of the Fiba Asia Cup Qualifiers.

MANILA, Philippines—Rain or Shine dropped Game 1 of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinals at the hands of TNT but Adrian Nocum was certainly the center of attention in the defeat.
Following the Tropang Giga’s 88-84 win over the Elasto Painters, coach Chot Reyes and league veteran Jayson Castro commended the rising point guard for his steady projection as a star in the league.
“Actually, I think he’s better than me because he’s taller and has a higher vertical than me,” said Castro boldly.

MANILA, Philippines—TNT import Rondae Hollis-Jefferson had his fair share of struggles in Game 1 of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinals against Rain or Shine.
Fortunately, the Tropang Giga had someone more than capable to step up to the plate in the form of team veteran Jayson Castro.
The pesky Rain or Shine team held on until the end but Castro’s leadership kept them at bay to power TNT to an 88-84 win at Araneta Coliseum on Wednesday.

TNT and Rain or Shine collide, while NorthPort tests its mettle against Barangay Ginebra on Tuesday, thawing the ice on the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Final Four.
The No. 2-seed Tropang Giga and the sixth-ranked Elasto Painters meet again in a best-of-seven semifinal series, with TNT the obvious favorite thanks largely to its swift disposal of Rain or Shine in the last conference.
But coach Chot Reyes has been in this league so long that he knows history really does nothing to what’s at hand.
