Fitting farewell: Mocon ends NCAA career with 4th title, Finals MVP

Javee Mocon couldn’t have had a better ending to his collegiate career than on Monday night.

In his farewell game, Mocon led San Beda to its third straight NCAA championship and was also named Finals MVP.

Mocon recorded a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds on top of five blocks in Game 2 where the Red Lions swept the Lyceum Pirates for the second straight year.

The Finals MVP plum didn’t come as a surprise to many after the two-way forward averaged 15 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3 blocks in the title round.

But of all people, it was Mocon who was caught off guard with the award.

“Actually, I wasn’t thinking about it,” Mocon told reporters in Filipino after San Beda’s 71-56 win. “I’m just doing my part. I’m very thankful for my parents who are there for me through the good and bad and especially coach (Boyet Fernandez) who always pushes me to work hard.”

Mocon wrapped up his career with San Beda with four seniors and two juniors titles.

The Red Lions won their 11th NCAA title in 13 years and 22nd overall.
