San Beda remains unbeaten, keeps Mapua winless at Filoil Cup

ballMANILA, Philippines — Ola Adeogun and Art dela Cruz each had a double-double to power San Beda to an 80-68 win over Mapua at the 2014 Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup Saturday at the Arena in San Juan.

Nigerian center Adeogun scored an efficient 23 points – shooting eight-of-10 from the field and missing only one of his eight attempts at the free throw line – to go along with 12 rebounds in just 26 minutes while Dela Cruz tallied 14 points and 12 boards.

The Red Lions, the reigning four-time NCAA champions, improved to 5-0 and are now assured of a quarterfinals slot but their head coach Boyet Fernandez knows his team is still far from its championship form.

“We still have many things to work on. We had a big lead but Mapua made a big run. We really have to take good care of the ball,” Fernandez said, whose team led by as much as 24 points.

When asked what their unbeaten record means, “5-0 is nothing if we don’t achieve what we want to achieve.”

“Our next goal is to make the semifinals but whatever happens we just want to keep on improving.”

San Beda faces Far Eastern University, which is also undefeated after five games, next on May 31.

Josan Nimes registered 19 points and eight rebounds while Joseph Eriobu chipped in 18 points for the Cardinals, who remained winless at 0-4.
