NCAA volleyball: JRU turn back Letran to get campaign going

MANILA, Philippines–Jose Rizal University rebounded from a first set loss to upend Letran, 13-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-17, for a winning start NCAA women’s volleyball tournament Tuesday at Paco Arena.

Sydney Riegos had three blocks for a 11-point effort, Renesa Melgar had 10 points and 13 digs while Dolly Verzosa contributed nine points for the Lady Bombers.

Shereena Urmeneta took the scoring mantle for the Lady Knights with 13 points, while Cha Cuñada chipped in 12 points.

It was Verzosa who turned things around for JRU in the second set by building a 16-12 lead and fending off a late Letran rally after Urmenata committed an attack error followed by a service ace by setter Jerry Lyn Laurente.

The Lady Bombers finally got into the groove of things in the next two sets to prevail in the two-hour, six-minute match.

Marianne Alona, JRU’s new libero made her presence felt with 19 digs and five receptions while Laurente tossed in 23 excellent sets and to go with two service aces.

The Lady Bombers, who tallied four wins in the pandemic-hit 2020 season, hope to fare well with an upgraded roster in the setting and libero department.
