After emerging as the league’s top scorer for the second straight year, Eya Laure is not thinking of any individual awards as all she wants is to bring back the crown to University of Santo Tomas this UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament.

The UST team captain finished with a season-best 268 points in her team’s 10-4 finish in the elimination round, making a strong case as an MVP candidate as she also excelled in other skills departments.

While not being as impactful on offense as she was last season, La Salle’s Alleiah Malaluan is slowly trying to gain her confidence back en route to the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament’s Final Four.

KC Cepada powered the Lady Warriors with 19 points on 17 attacks on top of 14 digs and a pair of blocks and Vanessa Bangayan added 15 points and 17 digs in their first victory of the season after 13 games.

Alyssa Solomon and Cess Robles made the most of their Holy Week break to recharge as National University earned its third straight win in the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament and stayed in the hunt for the twice-to-beat incentive in the Final Four.

Since losing to league leader La Salle in back-to-back games, the Lady Bulldogs won three in a row capped by a 25-21, 25-14, 25-23 victory over the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws on Sunday at Philsports Arena.

Rookie Shevana Laput shows steady progress for La Salle

Rookie Shevana Laput was thrilled that she was able to show her development under La Salle, making the most of her first start in the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament.

The 6-foot-1 Laput shone in her first start with nine points to help La Salle regain its winning ways with a 25-15, 25-16, 25-16 rout of skidding University of the Philippines on Sunday at Philsports Arena.

“It feels great. It just shows that I developed and improved as a player and the coaches trust my abilities to have me play in the first six. It’s great and it’s an honor,” said Laput, who started in place of Baby Jyne Soreno. FULL STORY

La Salle proved too quick, too cohesive and too powerful for University of the Philippines in an emphatic 25-15, 25-16, 25-16, win that secured the Lady Spikers a sure trip to the Final Four of the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball on Sunday.

Oliver Almadro lauds Ateneo’s character despite crucial loss to Tigresses

Despite Ateneo’s crucial loss to University of Santo Tomas, coach Oliver Almadro lauded the fighting spirit of Faith Nisperos, who tied her UAAP career-high 31 points, and the rest of the Blue Eagles on Saturday.

Nisperos left everything on the floor with 29 kills and two blocks only for Ateneo to into the brink of  Final Four elimination in the Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament after the 22-25, 20-25, 29-27, 21-25 loss.

Imee Hernandez’s leadership shines in career night for UST Tigresses

Imee Hernandez imposed her will in the middle and showed her leadership to the young University of Santo Tomas Tigresses, finishing with a career-high 24 points to send the Ateneo Blue Eagles to the brink of elimination in the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament.

Hernandez poured in 19 attacks out of 31 attempts and fired three blocks and two aces in their 25-22, 25-20, 27-29, 25-21 win over Ateneo on Saturday at Philsports Arena.

Adamson regroups late to fight off UE in women’s volleyball

Adamson encountered some scary moments before holding off University of the East, 25-16, 25-19, 20-25, 27-25, on Saturday at the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball.

Kate Santiago imposed herself at the net with 18 points built on 16 attacks while Trisha Tubu smashed her way to 11 attacks out of 13 points as the Lady Falcons picked up their eighth victory against three defeats.

National University refused to engage Adamson into another tight confrontation, prevailing with plenty to spare, 26-24, 25-16, 25-22, on Wednesday at the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball.

Bella Belen ruthlessly bombarded the enemy’s lair and delivered 20 points, 18 of them high-octane attacks as the Lady Bulldogs imposed themselves forcefully in notching a second straight victory, their seventh overall in 10 games following a long break.

FEU Lady Tamaraws’ 23 blocks not suprising, says Chenie Tagaod

Far Eastern University showed exemplary floor defense in its 25-16, 18-25, 25-23, 25-16 win against University of the East on Sunday at Araneta Coliseum.

The Lady Tamaraws showed off brilliance on the defensive end against UE with 23 team blocks but according to Chenie Tagaod, who tallied six of those blocks, it was not all that surprising.

The closest Eya Laure has ever gotten to the UAAP women’s volleyball crown was in Season 81, when her University of Santo Tomas (UST) battled Ateneo in the finals.

The enduring image of Laure in that series was not one of triumph.

Milena Alessandrini overcomes trauma to help UST stun La Salle

Milena Alessandrini not only delivered a big game to help University of Santo Tomas topple La Salle on Sunday, she also overcame the trauma from her previous knee injury she suffered exactly four years ago at Araneta Coliseum.

“I focused and concentrated on what I had to do. No fear, no negative thoughts,” said Alessandrini.

Bernadett Pepito fulfilled her promise after her superb floor defense helped University of Santo Tomas pull off a stunner over La Salle in the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament on Sunday at Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Pepito backstopped Eya Laure, who fired a season-high 29 points, with 25 digs and 11 excellent receptions in UST’s 25-19, 14-25, 25-18, 25-12 victory, which put a chink in La Salle’s armor.

Laure summoned her killer instinct in full force and battered the enemy with a season-high 29 attacks as the Tigresses inflicted the tournament-leading Lady Spikers their first defeat of the season.

Angel Canino had another superb outing with 16 attacks and put up significant numbers in defense with 15 receptions and 14 excellent digs as the Lady Spikers chalked up a ninth straight victory, rewarding them with at least a playoff in the semifinals.

Adamson overcame fatigue and a listless start in downing University of Santo Tomas, 11-25, 25-21, 25-13, 25-22, on Saturday in the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament at the Philsports Arena.

Trisha Tubu scored 21 points built around 15 attacks capped by the game-clinching kill as the Lady Falcons notched their second consecutive triumph, Adamson’s sixth overall against two setbacks at the start of their second-round campaign.

UAAP video challenge pushes teams to achieve ‘perfect volleyball,’ says Ateneo players

Ateneo team captain Faith Nisperos believes the return of the video challenge system in the UAAP volleyball tournaments will help the league reach greater heights.

The video challenge system, which has 23 cameras around the court to monitor the action, was finally implemented to start the second round of the Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament on Saturday at Philsports Arena.

Angel Canino in running to duplicate old rival’s UAAP ROY-MVP record

La Salle swept the first round of the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament in relentless fashion on Wednesday, a trait the Lady Spikers have in Season 85 mainly because of Angel Canino.

And the La Salle rookie is, like what an old rival pulled off last year, on line to become a Rookie of the Year-Most Valuable Player (ROY-MVP), just the second player in league history.

Tied for the most points after the first round with 112, ranked fifth in the best receiver department with a 39.01 percent efficiency, and the seventh-best server with .29 aces per set, Canino is on course to doing what National University’s (NU) Bella Belen pulled off last season in leading the Lady Bulldogs to snapping a 65-year title wait. Angel Canino and Alyssa Solomon led the league in scoring and spiking after the first round of the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament.

La Salle rookie Canino and National University’s reigning Best Opposite Spiker Solomon emerged as the top scorers of the league both tallying a total of 112 points each. 

University of Santo Tomas star Eya Laure, last season’s best scorer, was third in scoring with 105 points built on 86 spikes, 15 blocks, and four aces. Adamson spiker Kate Santiago placed fourth after seven games with 97 points, while her rookie teammate Trisha Tubu and Faith Nisperos were tied at No.5 with 96 points apiece.

Reigning Most Valuable Player Bella Belen was the Top 7 scorer tied with Far Eastern University’s Jov Fernandez with 89 points each. Ateneo spiker Vanie Gandler had 80 points in the first round, followed by La Salle senior player Jolina Dela Cruz with 79 markers at No. 10. FULL STORY

Showing their true potential as a team, the  La Salle Lady Spikers finally got one over defending champion National University in the UAAP women’s volleyball Wednesday at Mall of Asia Arena.

Angel Canino, the Lady Spikers’ young star, spelled the difference for La Salle as she poured in 14 points to end a four-game skid to NU with a 25-10, 25-15, 25-21 victory and complete a seven-game sweep of the first round — the team’s best start since Season 76 in 2014. FULL STORY

Adamson Lady Falcons hope to sustain best start in second round

Adamson coach Jerry Yee was pleased to give the school its best first-round finish in 13 years but he wants the Lady Falcons to show better composure in the second round of the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament.

The Lady Falcons tied their Season 73 start in 2010 when coach Dulce Pante was still calling the shots for Angela Benting, Pau Soriano, Bang Pineda, and Mayette Zapanta.

La Salle crushes defending champion NU to sweep women’s volleyball first round

La Salle masterfully came out firing on all cylinders and denied National University any chance of recovery, 25-10, 25-15, 25-21, to sweep the first round of the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday.

Rookie Angel Canino punctured holes at the enemy lines with 14 points, highlighted by 11 attacks, while veterans Thea Gagate, Fifi Sharma and Jolina Dela Cruz had their share of the limelight in the statement win.

Adamson withstood a late charge by the University of the Philippines on its way to a 25-18, 25-17, 25-23 victory on Wednesday in the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena.

National University warmed up for the much-awaited titanic La Salle clash with an assertive 25-21, 25-9, 25-18 victory over Far Eastern University on Saturday at the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball.

Eya Laure, UST Tigresses hold off UE for third straight win

University of Santo Tomas had to scrape past University of the East in a marathon first set before prevailing, 30-32, 25-18, 25-16, 25-14, on Saturday at the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball.

Eya Laure closed out the win with a ruthless kill through the blocking Riza Nogales that capped an 18-point, 14-attack performance for the Tigresses’ third consecutive victory.

UST dusts off Ateneo, looks to maintain menacing form to end first round

They are hoping to flash the same killer mentality when they face a lowly opponent on Friday.

“As I’ve said, all teams are competitive,” UST coach Kungfu Reyes said after the Tigresses swept aside the Blue Eagles, 25-19, 25-23, 25-14, in the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament at Filoil EcoOil Arena. “[There are teams that] just couldn’t close out a game with a win.”

UST’s fourth win in six games set the team up for a chance to end the first round on a high note. But the Tigresses don’t want to be caught with their guard down against winless University of the East (UE).

Shooting down the Ateneo Blue Eagles has become a force of habit for the De La Salle Lady Spikers.

Rookie Angel Canino showed maturity beyond her years in leading the Lady Spikers to victory over their arch nemesis on Sunday, 25-16, 25-20, 25-13, at the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament.

Milena Alessandrini plays with ‘big heart’ to help UST despite tweaking ankle

Shrugging off a right ankle injury early in the fourth set, Milena Alessandrini returned and delivered when it mattered most for University of Santo Tomas in handing National University’s first loss in the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament.

Alessandrini went down in the fourth set after a bad landing when the game was tied at 6-all. She was assisted by her coaches to walk off the court while crying.

“I was very scared when I went down I thought in my mind something serious again, how can I survive again to face another injury, then I prayed and the coaches helped me to recover to treat my ankle,” said Alessandrini after the game. FULL STORY

University of Santo Tomas pulled out all the stops and did the unthinkable by scoring a 25-23, 27-25, 17-25, 22-25, 15-11 reversal of defending champion National University on Wednesday night at the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament.

Eya Laure carried out the game-clinching block on Alyssa Solomon that capped a whirlwind finish for the Golden Tigresses, who finally stopped the rampaging Lady Bulldogs on their tracks from a long triumphant stretch.

Trisha Tubu tunes out comments on her appearance as she shines for Adamson

Rookie spiker Trisha Tubu said she is blocking off the “social media noise” and keeping her focus on delivering for the Adamson Lady Falcons in their UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball campaign.

Tubu is aware of the mean comments about her appearance, saying social media hasn’t been kind to her since high school where she played in the UAAP girls’ volleyball for Adamson.

“In the first place, I can’t do anything with what people want to say about me. All I need is my team. Whatever other people say, I stay out of it because I can’t do anything,” said Tubu in Filipino after scoring 13 points in Adamson’s 25-21, 24-26, 25-14, 25-21 victory over Far Eastern University . Adamson took care of business and pulled off a 25-21, 24-26, 25-14, 25-21 victory over Far Eastern University on Saturday at the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament.

Kate Santiago helped propel the Lady Falcons to their second win after three games with 18 points, 17 of them crucial attacks that kept the Lady Tamaraws at bay most of the time.

Facing five-set challenge for first time since high school, NU figures out more ways to improve unbeaten run

National University (NU) was dragged to a five-setter for the first time in two seasons of the UAAP women’s volleyball competition.

And a 25-22, 25-19, 25-27, 22-25, 15-10 win over the Adamson Lady Falcons on Wednesday seems to be bad news for the rest of the 85th Season field as the Lady Bulldogs experienced—and won over—adversity early and can address everything that went wrong.

Back in the UAAP after six years, Adamson coach Jerry Yee couldn’t help but marvel at the league’s level of competition in his return.

Leading the Lady Falcons to a rousing Season 85 debut with a 25-19, 25-9, 25-5 demolishing of University of the East on Saturday, Yee relished his comeback.

NU Belles confident of repeat

The National University (NU) Lady Bulldogs did something unexpected last season. Starting Saturday, though, the defending champions know exactly what to expect.

The UAAP men’s and women’s volleyball tournaments will have to wait longer for the implementation of the video challenge this season, but pre-pandemic rituals–including the traditional handshakes and change of courts–return amid eased restrictions when the league opens on Saturday at Mall of Asia Arena.

Eya Laure is eager to settle her unfinished business in the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament as she leads a revamped University of Santo Tomas team.

Laure, last season’s top scorer with a total of 272 points in the elimination round, took some time before deciding whether she would come back as a Golden Tigress after their third-seeded team collapsed in the stepladder semifinal and lost to the Ateneo Blue Eagles in a do-or-die game.

After ending a 65-year title drought last season with a perfect 16-0 campaign, the National University Lady Bulldogs have a target on their backs when they defend their throne this UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament starting on Saturday at Mall of Asia Arena.

The Lady Bulldogs, bannered by reigning season MVP Bella Belen, Cess Robles, Alyssa Solomon, Lams Lamina, Sheena Toring, and Jennifer Nierva, were far from satisfied despite their historic run as they made the most of the busy offseason to become stronger and better.

Contenders La Salle, Ateneo, and University of Santo Tomas also beefed up their respective rosters, joined the preseason leagues, and held training camp as they are out to redeem themselves after failing to capture the crown last year.
